BROWNS COACH MIKE PETTINE ON LEBRON, JOHNNY MANZIEL NOT RUNNING WITH THE ONES AND JUSTIN GILBERT’S INJURY
On if he offered Cleveland Cavaliers LeBron James a contract as he watched practice from the sideline:
“No, but I do know I’m going to be Father of the Year. I got my daughter a picture with LeBron. She could care less about a picture with me.”
On how he said that GM Ray Farmer is going to bring in a lot of players but bringing James is a little extreme:
“He had reached out. We knew he had been out of town for a while and when he got back he was going to come out to practice. It was something that we had been looking forward to.”
On what he talked about with James:
“He just asked how camp was going. You can tell he’s into it – loves football, big Browns fan. He says he’ll be at the games when it’s warm and when it’s cold he’ll be watching them in his basement.”
On if he believes in synergy in a city where both teams start winning at the same time like what happened in Boston:
“I do. It’s hard to explain when it happens, but I think it kind of gets fed through the fans with the teams. I don’t know how many of them are connecting with each other, but the city gets revved up and I think you can have momentum from season to season.”
On if he’s ready for the first preseason games:
“I think we are. I think the coaches have done a good job towards the end of this week getting the guys ready for what we’re actually going to show. We’ve probably given them a little more to study than they’ll actually run so the ready list and the call sheet are different sizes, but I think we’ve had a good build-up to it. We’re all looking forward to going against somebody else.”
On if he’s given the team any more information regarding play time:
“No. We’ve kept it pretty vague with them. This thing can go a lot of different ways, as you know. I didn’t want to give them exact specifics or exact counts. You never know what can happen early on. I told those guys I’d rather them be prepared to play more than they think they’re going to play than give them a number and then put them over it.”
On if QB Johnny Manziel will get reps with the ones:
“I don’t think he will. I think we’re going to let (QB) Brian (Hoyer) go. The circumstances could change that obviously. For this game, I think pretty much stick to the units as we’ve practiced so Brian with the ones and Johnny with the twos.”
On if he thinks it might help Manziel to have James in town to help him deal with all the attention he draws since James has been through it before:
“Yeah, I’m sure he could. They’ve probably already had discussions. He’s such a big star in the city and knows the city as well as he does and has the fame that he’s earned over the years. I’m sure it could be nothing but a positive for Johnny.”
On if there’s any reason he’s not going to have Manziel play any series with the ones on Saturday:
“No. No solid [reason] other than we just didn’t want to mix the units in this game.”
On DB Justin Gilbert is playing on Saturday:
“Gilbert is a little bit nicked. I don’t know. I think (VP of Communications) Peter (John-Baptiste) is going to send [the media] a list once we get the final evaluation from (Head Athletic Trainer) John Sheehan of who can go and who can’t.”
On what units he’s most looking forward to seeing other than quarterback:
“Running back, the guard spot – I think there’s good competition there. (OL John) Greco, (OL Garrett) Gilkey, I want to see how (OL Joel) Bitonio plays. I’m very interested in that. [I’m looking forward to seeing] the receivers.”
On the linemen’s extra point competition to determine who gets the orange jerseys next practice:
“The linemen do a lot of the chirping back and forth over the orange shirt stuff, so I wanted to find a way for them to settle it. There were some very unique styles of kicking. I think ‘Des’ (DL Desmond Bryant) set a record for hang-time on an extra point.”
On if it makes him hope nothing happens K Billy Cundiff:
“Yeah. I don’t think we’re going to find a replacement in that group.”
On how he picked the guys who kicked the extra points:
“We just said from the O line room and the D line room – they just nominated three guys on their own and sent them up World Cup style.”
On how he thinks these challenge periods have brought players together:
“I think it helps. You’ve got to mix it in. We obviously don’t do something like that every day. It’ll maybe be a once a week thing where it’s kind of an ‘off the beaten path’ competition. I think the guys look forward to it. Having the jerseys means something to them and there’s a little bit of back and forth between the units. It’s been a positive.”
On if he knew the perks of meeting guys like former Browns RB Jim Brown and LeBron James came with this job:
“I did not. When I got hired somebody very quickly brought up to me that I might have both of those opportunities. That’s two things off the bucket list.”
On if he heard a buzz among the players when James walked up:
“I think so and he’s taller in person. You get used to the NBA games where it’s relative. You don’t get a feel for the height unless you actually see them among civilians and you realize how tall they are.”
On if he can envision James as a red-zone target if he had chosen to play football:
“Yeah. He’d be a heck of a target. Let’s just flex him out a little bit and just throw one up for him. That would be very enticing.”
On if quarterbacks Tyler Thigpen and Connor Shaw will play in Saturday’s preseason game:
“I’m not sure how (quarterbacks coach) Dowell (Loggains) has the rotation. The coaches are all handing them into me today. They’re all planning for the game. I’m not sure how he’s going to work Tyler and Connor.”
On if there was any discussion with James about if he was going to run any plays:
“No, we didn’t get to that point. His kids were running around. He had his hands full there.”
EVEN NATIONALLY ON FOX SPORTS RADIO THEY WANT TO TALK “JOHNNY FOOTBALL”
Earlier this week I joined the Jason Smith Show on Fox Sports Radio to talk about, well who else, Johnny Manziel and his trip to Vegas!
MANZIEL NOT THE ONLY BROWNS ROOKIE OUT OF TOWN AFTER OTA’S
When the Browns drafted Johnny Manziel, they knew they were getting the “Johnny Football” persona too. So when Manziel has time off to do what he wants and decides to go Las Vegas it’s going to be a big deal no matter what he does.
He could have stayed in his hotel or maybe just went gambling like many other 21 year olds do at one of the casinos along the strip and that would have been a major story because of who he is and what the was doing. That would have been guilt by reputation. I could just see the TMZ headline – “Did Johnny Football Gamble Away His Signing Bonus“!
But Johnny Manziel didn’t stay in and low key it in Vegas, instead he went out and had what looked to be a kick ass time with Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski at a pool party with beautiful women in bathing suits and he also attended a UFC event. Call that one guilt by association if you want to because “Johnny Football” was partying with “Gronk” and hot women! So this WAS the TMZ headline –
JOHNNY MANZIEL – CHAMPAGNE RAINSTORM … In Vegas Nightclub

Did either of them get in any trouble? Have you heard of any arrests or were there any altercations? Did “Gronk or “Johnny Football” break any laws?
Just because Manziel didn’t stay in Cleveland in between OTA’s doesn’t mean he did something wrong.
In fact he wasn’t the only Browns high draft pick who didn’t stay in Cleveland during the time off between OTA’s. Fellow first rounder and 8th overall pick Justin Gilbert was, based on the Instagram pictures posted by former Ohio State Buckeye and current Steeler Ryan Shazier, and Instagram videos from Gilbert himself, in Miami, Florida hanging with some of the fellas over the weekend.

Shouldn’t Gilbert be scrutinized too? I mean what on God’s green earth what was the 8th overall pick doing out of Ohio? Why wasn’t the higher of the two draft picks back in his hotel room near Berea, Ohio just studying his play book for the next round of OTA’s with the Browns? Granted he wasn’t caught on video with alcohol in his hands or posing for pictures with women in bathing suits, but like Manziel he decided to get away for the weekend.
Why? Because they’re young aduls with lots of money and access to a good time. So they go enjoy themselves and as long as neither broke any team rules or any state laws or jeopardized the safety of the United States of America, it’s OK and you all need to just relax.
If the partying or going out of town on off nights continues during the season and it affects Manziel’s or Gilbert’s performance on the field and hurts the team, then everyone has a right to be upset. But until it gets to that, and hopefully it won’t, everybody needs to just realize you’ve got a rock star in town who’s going to garner attention no matter what he does, and as long as he doesn’t hurt himself, somebody else or the team, again you all need to just chill, because Manziel’s not the only one doing it and he didn’t do anything wrong.

CLEVELAND BROWNS 2014 NFL DRAFT PICKS – 6 PLAYERS
1st – 8th – Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
Gilbert fills a need at cornerback opposite Joe Haden. He gives the Browns potentially the best cornerback tandem in the AFC North. A cover corner with long arms, a good vertical jump who always seems to be in good position and around the ball. Not a good tackler and needs some work on his technique and getting closer to receivers at the line of scrimmage for a better jam. BONUS- A great return man who can take it the distance as he did 6 times in college. – Should be a starter from day one.
1st – 22nd – Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
Like “Johnny Football”, the Browns maneuvered their way around the first round to come back and get who they hope will be their franchise quarterback of the future. A mobile, accurate QB with big hands, who was highly successful against the toughest competition on a week-in, week-out basis in the country. Has great leadership and plays with a lot of heart, desire, passion and was a playmaker in college. The big question is will his short stature allow him to make those same plays at the NFL level and can his smaller frame withstand the physical punishment of faster, quicker, stronger, more violent defenders in the NFL? It would be best for him to not be thrown to the wolves, especially considering the first game of the regular season is on the road at Pittsburgh. Sitting and learning for AT LEAST a half a season would be extremely beneficial to him. – But I could see if the Browns start the season 0-3 and head into their bye week winless, you might see him start the 4th game of the season at Tennessee.
2nd – 35th – Joel Bitonio, OG, Nevada
Played left tackle in college but is probably better suited as an inside guy at guard, however his versatility is a major plus. When Mike Pettine was talking about getting tougher he had Bitonio in mind. Has a nasty steak in him which the Browns need. – Should be a starter from day one.
3rd – 71st – Christian Kirksey, OLB, Iowa
Not a very powerful linebacker but has good athleticism, is quick, agile and a motor that never stops. Also a good cover backer. Needs to separate from blockers better. – Should start on special teams, but is 2nd or 3rd on the depth chart at linebacker.
3rd – 94th – Terrance West, RB, Towson
A power back that will get you the tough yards in short yardage situations. Prefers to deliver the blow as opposed to taking it, but that was against smaller competition, we’ll see if he’s able to do the same in the NFL. Has a good stiff arm, catches the ball well and has good feet. Ball security must improve again against stronger competition and needs to work on his blocking. – Has a chance to be Ben Tate’s backup right away.
4th – 127th – Pierre Desir, CB, Lindenwood
Was the small college defensive player of the year at Lindenwood. 25 career interceptions. Has good size at 6’1, plus long arms at 33 inches and enjoys contact. But is raw and didn’t play against elite competition often and when he did in the East-West Shrine and Senior Bowl he was very inconsistent. – Should help on special teams and the Browns will try and develop him in to a starter down the road.
