MIKE PETTINE POST PRACTICE PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT FOR 8-15-14

Mike Pettine Game Sideline Photo

On the fan reaction at training camp so far:

“It’s been tremendous. I came here and the fans had a certain reputation. You kind of sense it from the outside – the passion, the loyalty. They just proved it over the course of training camp. I think we averaged the most fans the Browns have ever had for training camp. You can just sense the enthusiasm. It’s something I think is going to be huge for our guys. We want the Dawg Pound to bring back the days of old when home-field advantage will truly be a home-field advantage. You look at what Seattle has been able to do with the 12th man. If we go out there and are playing good football and give our fans something to cheer about, they’ll be among the loudest in the league.”

On how the ice bath was from participating in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge:

“I got lucky. I’m sure when you review the tape I was braced for it, and I think the buckets, because they were filled with ice, were a little bit heavy for the guys to lift. I got some down the back which was refreshing. It was good. It’s for a great cause. I do want to go ahead and put the challenge out there to the (ESPN) Monday Night (Football) crew, especially (MNF commentator) Mike Tirico and (MNF analyst) Jon Gruden. I know they’ll appreciate it. I was around (Baltimore Ravens senior advisor to play development) O.J. Brigance, who was afflicted with ALS, in Baltimore. He’s just an amazing person, and I just think it’s for a great cause.”

On how he’s going to use the QBs this week:

“It’s hard to say. I know a report came out about how we’re going to use them series-wise. To me, it’s more we want to make sure we get the reps balanced. I think it’s hard to go every other series, so we’ll just have a pretty good feel. If the first drive is a long one, there’s a chance we can go ahead and make the switch, but I don’t want to back myself into any commitment on it’s going to be this or it’s going to be that. The goal is, as I’ve stated, that at the end of the half, we want to have those reps close to equal.”

On why QB Johnny Manziel isn’t starting if the reps are going to be equal:

“Because that’s the decision we made. We’re making our decisions based on the information we have based on the body of work. That’s what we decided to do.”

On if Manziel hasn’t earned the right to start:

“No, it’s just something where there were a lot of factors involved. Ultimately when we hashed it out, that’s the direction we went.”

On if he’d like to see Manziel against the Washington Redskins’ first team defense:

“Yeah, and I’m expecting, it being the second preseason game, that they’re going to extend their starters into the second quarter if not until the half. I know I don’t have control over when their guys are out there, but I’m confident that he’ll get some work against their ones.”

On if he thinks anything can happen in the quarterback competition despite the fact that QB Brian Hoyer is starting this game:

“All of our options are still on the table. I think a lot of people read into what happened. Every option for us is still on the table.”

On how much leadership ability, maturity and off-the-field behavior will weigh into the decision on quarterbacks:

“I don’t know if I can say, ‘Hey, this is the amount,’ but it does. You’re looking for the whole package – the quarterback who’s best suited to take the field and lead this team to a win against the (Pittsburgh) Steelers. That’s the bottom-line decision that we have to make. There will be a lot of things that go into it.”

On if Manziel can still win the job and what does he have to do:

“Sure he can. Like I said, all of our options are still on the table. He just needs to go out and play. That’s the bottom line. They both do. I’ve met with both of them and discussed the situation. They’re both comfortable with it, and they both know it’s going to be up to them when they’re out there to just go out and do their job. You never want a guy to try and do too much and come out of structure in order to accomplish something. We keep preaching to our guys, ‘Do your job and good things will happen.’”

On if he’s disappointed that Hoyer hasn’t separated himself from Manziel and run away with the competition:

“I don’t think so. I think they both started camp at a certain point and they both made improvement. They’ve both made big strides. When you look at it, and I mentioned it last week, we feel like we’re in a good position. We have two quarterbacks who we feel have NFL starter ability. That’s why it’ll be a difficult decision. I don’t see it as a disappointment that one hasn’t distinguished himself over the other.”

On hoping that someone makes the decision easy based on their play:

“You hope. That might not necessarily be the case, but a decision still has to be made.”

On if he thinks, aside from the quarterbacks, that he knows enough to have his 22 starters in place after the second preseason game:

“We’re hopeful. We are hopeful. I think a lot of them are close. That’s always good when you have that depth, but we’ll lean towards one guy or the other. In the position of (DB Justin) Gilbert and (DB Buster) Skrine, I think that that’s a position where you can kind of job-share a little bit, but we’ll have to decide on a starter; same with (LB Craig) Robertson and (LB Chris) Kirksey. We’ve already talked about how they’re both playing well. That adds to their team value if they’re kind of balancing the reps out there or basically going by package.”

On if he anticipates making a decision on quarterback on Tuesday:

“Yeah, that should be the target date. Something unforeseen could come up, but we’re hopeful. I do want to see if I can cut the quarterback questions down by about 90-percent after next week (laughter). The chemistry and the continuity, I think it’s important to establish that.”

On who will make that decision:

“It’ll be a group of us. It’ll be (quarterbacks coach) Dowell (Loggains), (offensive coordinator) Kyle (Shanahan). We might involve (General Manager) Ray (Farmer) just to kind of listen and observe. There might be another guy or two in there.”

On what Owner Jimmy Haslam has said about the quarterbacks:

“We talk about it, but it’s just more of an update. He goes around. He’ll talk to Kyle. He’ll talk to Dowell. He just doesn’t talk to those guys. He kind of gets an assessment at every position. He likes to talk to the coordinators about their side of the ball. Usually, I’m just echoing what the other guys are saying. He’s a big fan. He wants to know. You can tell he’s passionate about his team. He wants to know what’s going on and he asks the right questions.”

On the story about Halsam having something to do with the drafting of Manziel and being the type of guy who would influence this decision:

“That falls into the ‘stories’ category. I think that made for good press on the draft, but even before the draft started, he came in and said ‘Hey, have a great day, and I’ll be behind you whatever pick you make.’ He wanted the information. He wanted to know when we stocked the board, why. He wanted to know about the players, not just the quarterbacks. Then he sat back and let Ray work.”

On if Manziel was late for a meeting and if that’s a big deal:

“That’s internal business. Moving forward, I’m not going to discuss matters and stuff that happens that’s team business. We like to keep stuff in the family. It’s unfortunate that that report came out, but I’m not going to confirm or deny it. I’m also not going to be in the habit of discussing anything internal.”

On if he views the quarterback decision as a long term one or more of a short term starter:

“I think quarterback is different from other positions. You do want to make a commitment. I don’t know if you can necessarily make a permanent commitment. So much could change over the course of an NFL season – the circumstances, but I think that’s the one position where you probably have to have a little bit more patience than maybe some others as far as if a guy isn’t performing to the level you think he can and you’re not getting the results, you would go ahead and make a move. I would say it’s somewhere in between. I don’t want whoever the starter is to feel like, ‘Oh, if I make one mistake I’m out.’ I also don’t want him to feel like, ‘Hey, I’ve achieved something. This is my team for the year.’”

On how close Manziel has come to being a model citizen in terms of committing to football:

“I think his play has demonstrated that – during the break, how he studied the IPad. He’d dial up with the right questions, and then he’s come in much more polished in and out of the huddle. That curve that I’ve already talked about, we feel like he’s a little bit ahead of the learning curve as far as being able to call the play, knowing what that play means, what are the reads on the play, who’s primary, what’s the defense, where do I go with the ball. I think he’s ahead of where we expected him to be.”

On if he knows what happened to Skrine:

“I think it was something with his thumb, but I haven’t gotten the final report yet from (head athletic trainer) Joe (Sheehan).

On who have been out of practice this week will be out for the game:

“(DL) ‘Des’ (Desmond Bryant) will definitely be out. (WR) Josh (Gordon) still has a chance. Who’s the last one? (WR) Nate (Burleson)? It’s not looking good for Nate to go.”

On if Desmond Bryant’s injury is serious:

“No, he’s just waiting – it’s more of a procedural thing – he’s waiting to get another opinion.”

On if TE Jordan Cameron will go on Monday:

“He should be able to go and same with (TE) MarQueis Gray.”

CAVS, BROWNS, INDIANS, BUCKEYES and GLADIATORS – NEWS AND NOTES

Dwyane Wade photo

MERRY CHRISTMAS CAVS

As we told you a few weeks ago and is now being reported by the four letter network’s Marc  Stein, LeBron James and the Cavs will play in a Christmas day game against Dwyane Wade and the Heat in Miami. The NBA and Cavaliers full schedule will be announced on Wednesday night around 6pm.

THE REX EFFECT ANS WHO STARTS AT QB

As we also told you months ago, Rex Grossman would sign with the Browns and the free agent QB has. We pointed out to you then that this made so much sense because he played for Kyle Shanahan in Washington and Houston, knows his offense and can help teach it to Brian Hoyer and more importantly, to Johnny Manziel. think of it this way, Grossman is to Johnny Football, what Gary Danielson was to Bernie Kosar. Grossman by the way, will wear #3.

Johnny Manziel In Game Huddle

As far as who the Browns starting QB will be in game #1 at Pittsburgh on Sunday, September 7th? Head coach Mike Pettine said he’d like to name that starter before the team’s third preseason game, preferably on their off day on Thursday, August 21st. Both Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel will take snaps with the first team offense in their second preseason game on Monday night in Washington. Here’s hoping one of the two QB’s helps the offense score a touchdown, something they didn’t do against Detroit and in their “Family Night” scrimmage.

WALKING WOUNDED WAHOO WARRIORS

Not a good time to have three key players hurt if you’re the Indians.

NICK SWISHER (right knee soreness): Was examined by Dr. Rick Parker yesterday at the Cleveland Clinic after recurrence of right knee pain.  Currently gathering more information and seeking additional opinions on present condition before diagnosis and plan of care are administered.

DAVID MURPHY (right oblique strain): MRI yesterday confirmed a strained right oblique. Expected to return to Major League game action in 4-to-5 weeks.

MICHAEL BOURN (left hamstring strain): Currently tolerating planned rehab assignment without issue. Was scheduled for 9.0 innings Tuesday in AAA Columbus.

BUCKEYES BLACK STRIPES

Raekwon McMillian OSU LBOhio State rookies wear black stripes on their helmets  during training camp until they display actions and efforts that prove they understand the Ohio State culture on the field of “4-to-6 seconds” and go as hard as you can from “point A to point B.” Once they show they understand that, they then have their black stripes removed. It should come as no surprise that the first two rookies to have the black stripe removed from their helmet were highly touted linebacker #5 Raekwon McMillan and running back Curtis Samuel.

Final Four 023

Ohio State’s December 2nd matchup at Louisville in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge is set for a 9:30pm tip from the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The game, one of 14 played during the three-day event, will be televised on ESPN.   In his career Thad Matta has a 6-4 record in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and has won five of the last six games in the event.

TITLE BOUND

SHANE AUSTIN - GLADIATORS QB

The Cleveland Gladiators, led by head coach Steve Thonn and quarterback Shane Austin will host Arena Bowl 27 at Quicken Loans Arena on Saturday, August 23rd at 8pm. The Gladiators (19-1) play the Arizona Rattlers (17-3) for the Arena League Championship! Austin, pictured right, threw 7 touchdown passes in the Conference Championship game to beat Orlando and advance Cleveland to the title game.

INDIANS INJURY NEWS ON NICK SWISHER, DAVID MURPHY AND MICHAEL BOURN

Here’s the latest injury updates on three Indians players –

Nick Swisher

NICK SWISHER (right knee soreness): Was examined by Dr. Rick Parker yesterday at the Cleveland Clinic after recurrence of right knee pain.  Currently gathering more information and seeking additional opinions on present condition before diagnosis and plan of care are administered.

DAVID MURPHY (right oblique strain): MRI yesterday confirmed a strained right oblique. Expected to return to Major League game action in 4-to-5 weeks.

MICHAEL BOURN (left hamstring strain): Currently tolerating planned rehab assignment without issue. Scheduled for 9.0 innings tonight in AAA Columbus.

MIKE PETTINE POST-PRACTICE TRANSCIPT ON SIGNING REX GROSSMAN, THE QB SITUATION AND WHO STARTS MONDAY vs WASHINGTON

Mike Pettine Game Sideline PhotoOn signing QB Rex Grossman:

“We’re always going to be in a situation where if we feel like we can make our roster better, we’ll make that move. He’s a guy that’s very familiar with (offensive coordinator) Kyle (Shanahan’s) system. We appreciate what (QB) Tyler (Thigpen) did for us, but we just felt like we wanted to get Rex in here and just see where he’s at and what he can do.”

On why the Browns didn’t go after Grossman to begin with:

“I’m not going to get into the specifics of the ‘why’ behind stuff. There are a lot of factors involved. We wanted to give Tyler an opportunity. We did and we felt it was time to go ahead and take a look at Rex”.

On if the Browns will keep three QBs on the roster:

“I haven’t gotten to that yet. I think it will also depend on where we are with the rest of the roster – if you get a guy that you absolutely want to keep. (QB) Connor Shaw will get some time as we go on most likely in the fourth game so we can see where he is in a game setting. You have options. OK, do you keep your third quarterback on the practice squad, or is he a guy that’s schooled up and then he’s on the street or do you keep him on the 53? You have some choices.”

On if he views Grossman as a personal mentor to QB Johnny Manziel on this offense:

“I don’t think so. I think he’ll help the whole room, not just Johnny. It’s a guy who I think has been in it now. This will maybe be his sixth year; I don’t know the exact number. I think he’ll help that whole room just as far as the stuff that he’s gone through with a lot of the plays. He knows the system as well as he does, and he’ll be able to give them a quarterback’s perspective instead of just the coaches’ perspective.”

On if part of it is that the other QBs aren’t far enough along and they need a guy like that:

“No, absolutely not.”

On if there’s a difference between what QB Brian Hoyer brings since he’s never been a full-time starter than what Grossman brings:

“Brian is in a unique situation. He does have years in the league, but it’s hard to put that veteran label on him because he doesn’t have that many career starts. In some aspects, he is a veteran because he’s been around for so long in the league, but he’s closer to being a rookie just as far as the number of snaps he’s taken in live game situations.”

On if this makes Hoyer expendable:

“No, absolutely not.”

On TE MarQueis Gray being listed as a TE rather than FB:

“No, he’s really both. He’s bounced back and forth. When (TE) Jordan (Cameron) got hurt, he went back and took some reps there. He was kind of split in practice between tight end and fullback, and we’re very pleased with the progress of (FB) Ray Agnew. He’s playing well. He’s more of a traditional fullback. That just opens up our options of what we can do down the road.”

On if offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan told him that Grossman is a great mentor and locker room guy:

“He is. Tyler was a lot like that, too. That’s why it was a difficult thing, but Rex kind of has that presence as well. He’s functioned well when he’s been out there for Kyle, but at the same time, he’s a good presence in the locker room and more importantly in the quarterback room.”

On if he’s decided who’s starting at quarterback against Washington yet:

“No, we’re going to make that decision on the off-day.”

On who has stood out among the younger WRs:

“I think (WR Taylor) Gabriel has shown up. He’s a guy who was nicked up in the spring a little bit, and we never really got a chance to evaluate him. He’s shown that it’s not too big for him – that he’s not afraid to go up there against (DB) Joe Haden or (DB Donte) Whitner or any of those guys. He’s not afraid of a challenge. He won’t back down. (WR) Willie Snead has flashed some production for us. He’s done some good things – did well in the scrimmage. I think that (WR) Charles Johnson is starting to get a little more consistent. I think in the beginning, he was a little inconsistent. He’s starting to show improvement. He made a nice catch over the middle today.”

On what he specifically likes about Agnew:

“There’s a toughness element with him that he brings. He’s not going to back down to anybody. We did a half-line drill today. He had a lot of kick-out blocks, and he wasn’t afraid to stick his face in there against our guys on defense. His ability to run the ball in short yardage – I think he’s shown that ability as well. He’s been solid out of the backfield catching the ball. You can do some things with a traditional fullback, but again, it’s all going to come down to the roster decisions at the end and how we want that group to look, whether it’s four tight ends, a fullback, Gray bouncing back and forth. Those are all questions we’ll have to answer.”

On if he looks back and chuckles about the interview that quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains did with the Arkansas radio station about drafting Manziel:

“He paid his penance for that. We made him wear a visor that said, ‘I’m a dummy,’ for a day during the spring at the walkthrough and took a picture of it and put it up in a team meeting. He learned a valuable lesson. Wherever you think you are, it’s comfortable and it’s back home and there’s a small radio station with not that many listeners, not too many things are sacred nowadays. Everything is going to get out. I think he learned from it. We laughed about it. He came to me today and warned me he was doing media.

On if he’s serious about the visor:

“Yeah, it’s hanging in his office right now. He’s waiting for somebody else to screw up so he can pass it on to somebody else.”

On if he’s on track to name a starter by the third preseason game:

“We’re on schedule. I think we’re on schedule.”

On what he meant yesterday when he said Manziel has to earn the start in the second preseason game:

“Johnny’s going to get reps with the ones. Just to me, the factor of starting the game I think is a little bit overblown in this situation because we’re going to try to balance the reps with the ones in the game. I don’t think it was anything. Brian came in ahead. It’s a little overrated (trotting) out there for the first time.”

On if he thinks there’s enough first team reps in the second preseason game through the first half where if Hoyer plays the first quarter, Manziel can still get that really good work in the second quarter:

“I don’t know if we’ll do it by quarters. We want to make sure they’re both getting reps. We haven’t decided on how to do it. We’ll see when we meet on the off-day. I think there are a lot of options on the table I have to get that sorted out – how we want to do it.”

On if it will be by series:

“It could be, but it’s hard to get into rhythm if it is by series. That will be one of the things we’ll discuss.”

On how he thinks WR Miles Austin has played:

“I think we’re very pleased. I think he’s done a great job off the field taking care of his body. We’ve monitored his reps. I think he feels good where he is right now physically. I think (strength and conditioning) Coach (Paul) Ricci and (head athletic trainer) Joe Sheehan feel good as well. It’s something where we’ll continue to keep an eye on him. He’s a veteran guy. He’ll know the system. If we have to give him a day off during the season, we’ve had guys on those types of plans before. The biggest thing will be making sure he’s available on Sunday.”

On if the game in Detroit shattering the rating record for an NFL Network program was because it was his first game or because it was Manziel’s first game:

“My first game. Absolutely (laughter). It’s not a surprise to hear that. I think the phenomenon still surprises all of us. We want attention on this team because we’re a good football team and we’re winning games. It’s nice to have the media attention here, but we want to get to the point where it’s for the right reasons.”

On how OL Joel Bitonio looked to him on the Detroit game film:

“He was good. He made some rookie mistakes, but I think if you asked him, he’d feel pretty good about the performance getting that first one under his belt going against some pretty good defensive tackles. He certainly did not look out of place there.”

On if he expects DB Justin Gilbert to play tomorrow:

“I do. He should practice tomorrow. He did some light individual work today. He should practice tomorrow.”

On how important it is for him to get some live reps in:

“He needs to play. It’s not just that position; it’s all of them. Like I’ve said before, there’s no substitute for live game repetitions. You can practice all you want, walk through all you want, but you’ve got to play. Until you can get out there and kind of see how guys react, you’re never going to know.”

On if WR Nate Burleson is running out of time to show them something:

“He’s injured so it’s tough now to get a true evaluation. We felt good about where he was before he got nicked up so hopefully we can get him back there soon. We’re hopeful that it can be later this week.”

On what he’s seen from FB Chris Ogbonnaya and where he fits:

“His strength I think, is his versatility. He can play the fullback. I think it comes more into play when you trim the roster all the way down and you only have a limited number of guys on offense and you need a fullback and you need a third-down back and you need a guy that can get you out of a game at tailback. He’s pretty good on special teams for (special teams coordinator) Chris Tabor as well. I think that the versatility is one of the reasons why he’s been able to stick in this league for so long.”

On how important it is for him to stay true to the depth chart when he picks starters for Monday’s game:

“I don’t know if I can just answer that until we sit down with everybody involved in the decision on the off-day. We’re all going to have an opinion on how we want to handle it, but it’s not going to be anything earth shattering. The bottom line coming out of the game is that they both should get close to equal reps with the ones no matter who starts.”

On if he plans to do what New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan did and switch spots with a member of the media:

“No, not happening. Who did he pick? That’s what I want to know.”

On Ryan switching spots with ESPN New York writer Rich Cimini:

“If I had to bet, that would have been who I bet money on.”

On if the competition today was just one play at the end:

“Yeah, it was one play – fourth and one, game on the line.

On if DL Desmond Bryant has any sort of serious injury:

“No. We just kind of bumped up his scheduled day off. He’s got something that’s just bugging him a little bit. He’s going to get it checked out today. It’s nothing major. We just bumped up his day off so he could get evaluated.”

MIKE PETTINE, BRIAN HOYER AND JOHNNY MANZIEL WITH THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE QUARTERBACK COMPETITION

Here’s some of what Browns head coach Mike Pettine and quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel had to say about the quarterback competition following Monday’s practice……….

Mike Pettine Game Sideline Photo

Mike Pettine – On if Hoyer getting reps with the ones today is still a statement that he’s ahead in the QB competition:

“Nothing’s changed. If there was a significant change on the depth chart, it would be reflected on the field.”

Mike PettineOn if he might just start him (Manziel) to start him:

“I don’t know if I’d agree with that. To me, if you’re going to put a guy in a starting role, that needs to be earned.”

Mike PettineOn if he needs to see him (Manziel) with the ones more often to get a better gage on that situation:

“Yeah, we will mix the reps this week, but as far as starting the game, we’ll make that decision as a committee. It’ll be based on several factors.”

Brian Hoyer In Game Throw

Brian Hoyer – On how he approaches the next game knowing it will possibly determine who starts the season opener:

“I don’t change my approach at all. To me, this is my team until someone else tells me otherwise and you just come out here and try to be the best quarterback that you can. You just ignore all of the noise and the hype and worry about what goes on in that building and what I can control. For me that’s coming out here and practicing the best that I can and when I get a chance to play, playing the best that I can.”

Brian Hoyer – On following up on Whitner’s 50/50 comment:

“I think that everybody has their own opinions, and for me, he’s going against us every day. He can form whatever opinions he likes, but like I said, for me, that’s not a concern because all I’m concerned about is being the best quarterback I can be and earning those guys’ respect. The way you do that is going out on the field and game and executing.”

Johnny Manziel In Game Shotgun Set Up

Johnny Manziel – On where he thinks he needs to improve moving forward after watching the tape from Saturday’s game against the Lions:

“Same thing as my initial thoughts after the game – saw some good things, saw some things I can improve on, but I felt like, for the most part, I went to the right spot with the ball, tried to get it to some check-downs and try and work through my progressions. I’m still getting better at. I thought it was a good starting point, and I took a lot away from the first game.”

Johnny Manziel – On if expects to start this week against the Redskins with the way reps have been divided up to this point in camp:

“I don’t expect anything. I expect to come out and get the reps and get the teamwork that I’m told I’m going to get. From there, go out and make the best of the opportunity that I have.”

Johnny Manziel – On if he hopes to start against the Redskins:

“I hope to do whatever the coaches tell me to do. That’s what I’m going to do, whatever they say, whether it’s No. 1’s, No. 2’s, whatever it is. I’m going to do what (Browns Head) Coach (Mike) Pettine and Coach (Browns offensive coordinator Kyle) Shanahan have in store for me.”

Johnny Manziel – On Browns DB Donte Whitner’s comments stating that the locker room was equally divided on who should be the starting quarterback and if he perceives it that way:

“I don’t feel any rift like that or anything going on in the locker room. As far as my end, I think they see two guys coming out playing football and competing as well as everybody else out on the field competing. Quarterback is obviously just the position that gets a lot of flash and gets a lot of attention, but at the same time there are guys battling all around. I don’t really know if there’s an exact split like that. It’s not something I’m really aware of right now. I know two guys are going out and competing, trying to move the ball down the field for this offense.”

6 BIGS THE CAVALIERS SHOULD LOOK AT

Former Cavs coach John Lucas is going to love this blog because it’s all about the “BIGS”.

The Cavaliers are in need of a halfway decent rim protector to come off the bench. So I searched the free agent market and looked at some teams that either have an excess of “BIGS” or just might be willing to deal one for a draft pick, and here’s the list of players I came up with.

VIA TRADE

JEFF WITHEY – 7’0 – 235 – 24 – Pelicans – $816,000

He only averaged 0.86 blocks per game, but that came in just 12 minutes per game. He’s young and would be a good role player coming off the bench for defense. Plus New Orleans has five PF/C on their roster. Might be able to get him for a future draft pick.

IAN MAHINMI – 6’11 – 250 – 27 – Pacers – $4,000,000

Averaged 0.94 blocks per game in 16 minutes per game. At 27, making $4 mill per season and with Indiana maybe looking to the future because of the Paul George injury and Lance Stephenson leaving through free agency, maybe Larry Bird would trade him for a future draft pick and a player to make the trade work.

TIMOFEY MOZGOV – 7’1 – 250 – 28 – Nuggets – $4,650,000

With four centers on the roster making about $23 million dollars amongst them,  Denver might be willing to dump his salary off on another team for expiring contracts and a draft pick. Mozgov averaged 1.22 blocks per game in about 22 minutes per game.

VIA FREE AGENCY

EKPE UDOH – 6’11 – 245 – 26 – UFA (Bucks)

Had some knee issues last season, but might be worth taking a chance on at a cheap price in free agency. Did average 3.4ppg-3.5rpg and 1 block per game in 19 minutes per contest.

JERMAINE O’NEAL – 6’11 – 255 – 35 – UFA (Warriors)

Yes he’s almost ancient, but played well for Golden State last year averaging 8ppg-5rpg and just under 1 block per game. If healthy, you might be able to get him for the veteran minimum.

EMEKA OKAFOR – 6’10 – 255 – 31 – UFA (Suns)

Missed all of last year with a neck injury, so obviously he’d have to be 100 percent healthy to even consider him. He’s really not a rim protector, but he is a big body who could clog the paint and maybe at least challenge shots. Not sure what type of salary he is looking for, that will factor into it as well.

THE GOOD AND THE BAD – BROWNS vs LIONS

Johnny Manziel In Game Huddle

Here’s what I took away from the Cleveland Browns first preseason game, a 13-12 loss to the Detroit Lions:

THE GOOD

Billy Cundiff was perfect going 4 for 4 on field goal attempts.

Armonty Bryant only had 1 tackle, but he did have 2 QB hits and pressured the quarterback.

John Greco was solid at the guard position as he try to win a starting job.

The receivers as a whole were bad, but I thought Charles Johnson and Taylor Gabriel got noticed.

Barkevious Mingo still has trouble with the run, but he did register the team’s only sack.

Donte Whitner had 2 tackles in limited time and sent a message with a big hit over the middle.

Ben Tate did average 4.2 yard per carry on 6 attempts running the ball.

I thought the starting offensive line did a solid all around job.

Johnny Manziel showed what we already knew; he can scramble and make yards with his legs and actually slid or went out of bounds when he should have to avoid the hit.

Spencer Lanning did a nice job punting the ball, averaging over 43 yards with 2 landing inside the 20.

Both Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel led their units on scoring drives, however they ended in 3 points and not 7.

LeBron James is a Cavalier again and it looks like Kevin Love is on his way to Cleveland in a trade!

THE BAD

The Browns offense has yet to score a TD in a scrimmage or the preseason game against the Lions.

Usually at least one player really stands out on offense in every game, no one did for the Browns.

11 penalties for 60 yards.

2 turnovers – 1 fumble (Dion Lewis) and 1 interception (Tyler Thigpen)

2 high throws by Brian Hoyer to wide open receivers.

1 high throw and 1 low throw by Johnny Manziel to open receivers.

At least 3 drops by the wide receivers.

Joe Haden was beaten twice early in the game and Calvin Johnson didn’t even play.

Pierre Desir had a rough rookie debut getting beat a few times, missing tackles and had a penalty.

Ben Tate fumbled but luckily recovered it. That’s been one of the knocks against him in his career.

The Browns kickoff coverage stunk, as the Lions averaged almost 31 yards per return.

Mitchell Schwartz had 2 penalties at right tackle.

Even though it was a preseason game, the Browns had the lead late in the contest and couldn’t protect the lead and lost in the last two minutes.

Leon McFadden was penalized twice on the final drive and also gave up a completed pass on that drive.

T.J. Heath was beaten for the game winning touchdown with 1:05 left in the game.
