I caught up with actress and diehard Kentucky Wildcats fan Ashley Judd as she was leaving her seat to go congratulate the Kentucky players. Here’s her description of the Wildcats come-from-behind win over Notre Dame.

Ohio State and Notre Dame set two-game series

Traditional college football powers will meet in 2022 and 2023

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University and the University of Notre Dame, two of the most tradition-rich and winningest programs in all of college football, have agreed to a home-and-home series on the gridiron for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

The Buckeyes, with seven national championships, seven Heisman Trophy winners, 850 victories and in its 125th season of football, and the Fighting Irish, owner of 11 national championships, seven Heisman Trophy winners and 875 victories, will kick off the 2022 season in Columbus on Sept 3. The return game in South Bend will take place Sept. 23, 2023.

“We are extremely pleased to have this series with Notre Dame scheduled,” Martin Jarmond, executive associate athletic director, said. “Notre Dame adds to the prestigious series of non-conference games we have been seeking to schedule that are competitive, attractive for our fans and exciting for our student-athletes to be a part.”

Ohio State’s impressive slate of future non-conference home-and-home series now features games with:

  •   Virginia Tech: Saturday in Columbus, and next year on Labor Day (Sept. 7) in Blacksburg, Va.;
  •   Oklahoma: Sept. 17, 2016 in Norman, Okla., and Sept. 16, 2017 in Columbus;
  •   TCU: Sept. 15, 2018 in Fort Worth, Texas, and Sept 21, 2019 in Columbus;
  •   Oregon: Sept. 12, 2020 in Eugene, Ore., and Sept. 11, 2021 in Columbus;
  •   Notre Dame: Sept. 3, 2022 in Columbus, and Sept. 23, 2023 in South Bend;
  •   Texas: Sept 17, 2022 in Austin, Texas, and Sept. 16, 2023 in Columbus; and
  •   Boston College: Sept. 9, 2023 in Columbus, and Sept. 2, 2024 (Labor Day) in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Ohio State and Notre Dame have met just five times previously in football with Notre Dame winning the first two meetings way back in the 1930s: 18-13 at Ohio Stadium in 1935 and 7-2 at Notre Dame Stadium in 1936.

A two-game series took place in 1995 and 1996 with the Buckeyes winning both: 45-26 in 1995 behind Eddie George’s 207-yards rushing and 272-yards passing and four touchdowns from Bobby Hoying; and 29-16 the following year in South Bend as Pepe Pearson rushed for 173 yards and Greg Bellisari (14 tackles) led a standout defensive effort that limited the Irish to 280 total yards.

Ohio State and Notre Dame were also matched in the 2006 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, a 34-20 Ohio State win that gave Ohio State a 3-2 all-time edge in the series. Quarterback Troy Smith threw for 342 yards, Ted Ginn had eight receptions for 167 yards, Antonio Pittman rushed for 136 yards and A.J. Hawk led the defense with 12 tackles, including 3.5 TFLs.

Scholars program benefits Central Ohio students

Ohio State and Notre Dame share in a scholarship fund that benefits students from the state of Ohio who attend either institution. The Joyce Scholars program, funded by the Glenna R. Joyce Trust Fund, provides four-year full scholarships to outstanding students from 115 central Ohio high schools (within seven counties) who attend either Notre Dame or Ohio State. The Joyce Scholar program began in 1961.
