THE PRO’S AND CON’S OF JOHNNY MANZIEL

PRO – He has that “IT” factor. He generates a buzz with everything he does on and off the field and that, to a point, will help you sell tickets and merchandise.

CON – Being such a free spirit off the field could get him in trouble and hurt his image and your team’s.

PRO – He’s a winner. He beat Alabama and took an average football school in Texas A&M and turned them into a contender in the vaunted SEC and became the first freshman ever to win the Heisman.

CON – While the Aggies contended, they didn’t win the SEC, let alone a national championship and he didn’t win the Heisman in his sophomore year.

PRO – His escapability allows him to turn bad plays into good plays and sometimes even great plays.

CON – His escapability creates extra opportunities for him to take unwanted hits from what will be bigger, faster and stronger NFL players.

PRO – Looks like he has the arm strength to make every throw that a QB needs to make in the NFL.

CON – His size could hurt him in trying to make those throws from inside the pocket especially with somewhat of a sidearm delivery.

PRO – He has very good leadership qualities.

CON – Tim Tebow had those same good leadership qualities and he’s working at ESPN already.

PRO – He throws well on the run and outside the pocket, he’s very accurate in those throws.

CON – He struggles the most from throwing inside the pocket where he will be asked to make most of his throws in the NFL.

PRO – Despite his size (5’11-207), he’s a very good athlete and makes that work for him on the field.

CON – His size and frame are average to below average in the NFL for a quarterback and teams are not sure his body could withstand the punishment it will take at the NFL level.

PRO – He has big hands which allows him to grip the ball well and helped him at the college level in making players miss on designed runs or broken plays.

CON – Because of those big hands he has the tendency to hold the ball out like a loaf of bread when runs and scrambles which could lead to fumbles at the NFL level.

PRO – He understands the game and is a pretty intelligent kid with a huge heart and a love for the game.

CON – Is he smart enough to know he’s going to have to change the way he plays if he wants to be successful at the NFL level and last longer than another running, scrambling type quarterback that is now a broadcaster after just 4 years in the NFL.

As a Browns fan living in SEC/ACC country (Greenville, SC) I came into the 2014 season thinking Manziel was overrated, had too many flaws and didn’t think he was a 1st round prospect. But, as the season began I found myself watching Texas A&M over and over again. I couldn’t believe how bad Texas A&M’s defense was, yet Manziel and the offense found ways to keep the Aggies in every game. So now, I’m all in! I want Manziel in Cleveland and there isn’t another player I want at #4 over him.

So as I read your Cons, I’m not totally convinced they are on par with the Pros.

1)Off field issues. Manziel is a rich 20 year old kid. Golfing at Pebble Beach, or being front row of NBA Finals, hanging with other rich athletes/stars aren’t bad things. I’ll give you the Texas frat party wasn’t great, but there was no police blotter incident to come from it. I don’t see any real off-field issues to be concerned about.

    2) Didn’t win a title. Neither did Peyton Manning. Tee Martin did at UT the year after Manning left, so its not like Manning didn’t have quality team around him. A&M had a wretched defense and a very below average run game. Hard to win a title without those two things.

2a) As for didn’t win Heisman in ’14, he very easily could’ve. He improved completion %, completions, passing yards, pass TD’s, and passer rating. Yes his INT’s went up and his rushing TD’s went down, but the 2nd may answer a future Con.

    3) Yes he runs around and may get hurt. Peyton Manning nearly broke his neck and it wasn’t from running around. Aaron Rodgers missed most of 2014. Injuries happen.

    4) Drew Bledsoe and Russell Wilson make throws from pocket despite smaller stature. I think Manziel does a good job of throwing on time through windows. And in improv, he can make Flutie like plays from pocket and outside.

    5) Tebow had bad accuracy, mechanics and so-so arm and still led a team to a playoff victory.

    6) Throws from pocket? From Rotoworld- For all the criticism Manziel gets, he’s extremely good at hitting his targets downfield. His ‘NFL type’ throws in the 11-20 yard range is the highest in the top 8 QBs in this class at 70.5% and he’s slightly better than Bortles at hitting the 20+ yard throws.

    – Before we start getting into the debates about Manziel scrambling around the heaving it up for Mike Evans…his accuracy was similar when throwing solely from the pocket, hitting 67% of his 11-20 yard passes and 59% of his 20+ yard passes

    7) Size. Brian Sipe weighed less than 200 lbs in an era with less QB protection. Hoyer weighs 215. Injuries happen, size doesn’t necessarily dictate injury.

    8) OK, got me there, but he rarely fumbles. Bortles had 9 fumbles in ’13, Manziel 2.

    9)Rush Attempts 2012 – 201, 2013 – 144…he’s already learning!

Drew Bledsoe was 6 Ft 5 and you cannot compare Johnny M with his style of throwing of his back foot, Drew would step up in the Pocket and always planted correctly on his back foot. Technically Johnny throws better scrambling/running out of the pocket like Fran T because he has to stand on his toe’s to see above line who are 6 foot 6 300 pounds on the average, even 6 foot 6 QB’s get their passes knocked down. There is only so many times you can run out of the pocket. Ask RG III how successful he was doing that his rookie season. Johnny M is a very exciting player but they will catch him in the NFL and it will not be pretty getting body slammed. I guess if you are a Cleveland fan, you need something to believe in.
